Saturday, June 7 and Sunday, June 8, 2008Sponsors: 28th Annual Art on the Lake set for June 7 & 8 in Excelsior Commons As sure as blooming daffodils signal the arrival of spring, the first indicator of summer’s start in the Lake Minnetonka community is when 200 white tents pop open at Excelsior Commons for Art on the Lake. That will happen this year on the weekend of June 7 – 8. The 2-day show runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. It is free and open to the public. Under new committee leadership, the 2-day arts festival will showcase 198 juried artists in 14 mediums including ceramics, clothing, fibers, glass, jewelry, leather, metal, mixed media, painting, printing making, drawing, sculpture, photography and wood. More than 350 artists from all over the Midwest and as far away as New Mexico and Florida applied for the show, according to Event Chair Chris Lizée of Shorewood. “We have had an excellent response from the art community and are thrilled with New this year is the 318 Café Stage, a dedicated venue for live band performances on Saturday and Sunday afternoons in the park’s bandshell. T-SHIRTSConsistent with previous years, the committee will sell a 2008 Art on the Lake t-shirt available on a first come, first served basis and will host a “hands on” art tent for children and adults to express their artistic spirits. The “hands on” tent will be located on the softball field just beyond the event headquarters building and will be open both days. DESIGN CONTESTIn cooperation with the City of Excelsior, the Art on the Lake Committee and the South Lake-Excelsior Chamber of Commerce will sponsor an art competition—open to all ages—for a new interior design for the 40-year-old band shell in Excelsior Commons. Art on the Lake organizers will provide an 11” x 17” template with the band shell drawn to scale. Contestants may draw or paint their design on the template. Entry forms may be picked up any time during Art on the Lake show hours and must be submitted no later than Friday, June 20. A committee of local artists and Chamber members will judge the entries. The top four finalists will be notified by mail. The winning design will ultimately have to be approved by the City of Excelsior. The 2008 Art on the Lake Committee will award $200 to the design winner. Contest details will be listed in the official Art on the Lake program distributed at the event. Design entries must be dropped off or mailed to Excelsior City Hall, Attn: Cheri, 339 Third St., Excelsior, MN 55331. (NOTE: ceramic tile designs will not qualify. The bandshell interior is gray concrete.)
